The golf majors, the Masters, the Open, the US Open and the PGA Championship every year, without fail, throw up spectacular golf, long drives, straight drives, short drives, birdies, unlikely pars, likely pars, great chips, duffed chips, brilliant bunker shots, mediocre bunker shots, great comebacks, good comebacks, excitement, drama, raw emotion, smiles, tears and simply brilliant events!

So it is with the Captains Prize in Ballinascorney Golf Club. The Open in July will not see anything quite like this!

After two days of brilliant competition over 42 holes Ger Redmond emerged victorious with a net 135 over 18 holes and 164 following the six hole play off. Ten pars on Sunday followed nine pars and two birdies on Saturday as Ger produced net 66 and 69 for two amazingly consistent rounds that set him up perfectly for the six hole play off.

It was Liam Redmond and Dave Rooney who tagged Ger all the way through the 36 holes to lie second and third respectively. Dave combined an opening day 66 with 75 on Sunday while Liam's 67 and 74 in the end produced the Best Gross Prize.

But as is the nature of major competitions across the golf spectrum it was Gary Walsh who staged a remarkable charge in the play off to almost steal the title on the last hole. Two remarkably consistent rounds of 72 and 71 left Gary lurking for glory as the play off started in deteriorating weather conditions. A brilliant net 22 ensured that Ger was pushed right to the last putt for victory, but he kept his nerve on a tension filled 42nd hole.

Raw emotion on the last green as Ger finally added the last big title that he craved. As he said in his speech it was 28 years of trying but a fully deserved victory for a remarkably consistent and talented golfer.

Another great Captains Prize event that paid respect and honour to a great Captain.

Many tributes were paid to the quality of course and thanks must go to Roy, Alan and the course staff, not forgetting Jimmy and Eileen on the Course Committee. A special thanks also to Competition Secretary Dermot Murray and his assistant Tom Hogan for the huge work done in organising the competition.

Congratulations Captain Gerry.............and Captains Prize Winner 2019 Ger Redmond!
