The Men's Singles Matchplay competition is steadily becoming the Blue Riband event of the Men's Club. There have been some titanic finals over the years with champions and finalists that have carved their niche in our Club. This year was no exception.

Tim O'Neill and Dr Pat MacCarthy have been high performing players this year with a number of victories and even more numerous placings between them. They both deservedly came through tough draws to reach the final, a final that has been eagerly awaited in recent weeks.

Played out on a calm afternoon despite threatening rain the early stages of the match were surprise there! No quarter was given and wins were as common as hens teeth. Every stroke was measured and countered and every putt was a potential game changer.

It remained all to play for at the turn with both players searching for an edge. Pat's singing seemed to be motivating Tim, which proved perplexing for Pat, as he has often sung opponents into submission. With Pat's secret weapon misfiring Tim gradually began to gain the upper hand on the inward nine. Even a verse of the Banks didn't deter Tim as he sneaked into the lead in the closing stages and a perfectly played 17th saw him clinch the match with one hole to play.

Yet another titanic final, well done to both players!

Congratulations Tim O'Neill, Men's Singles Champion 2019. Commiserations Pat, keep singing, and there is every prospect of another final next year!
