Some people collect stamps, some people collect paintings, some people collect antiques but not Monica Flood! No Monica collects Lady Captains prizes!

Just two years after swooping to claim Hilary Coffey’s prize, this weekend Monica left the 58 strong field trailing in her wake to snatch Lady Captain Catherine’s prize.

A nett 36 out and 35 back for a nett 18 score of one under par 71 left Monica three shots clear of Rosaleen McGarry Lynch. Monica carefully constructed a beautifully consistent round, underpinned by pars on 3 and 12. A slight wobble on 16 and 17, as greatness and immortality beckoned, was not enough to give the field any encouragement and a five on 18 was all that was needed.

A great victory Monica, well played and congratulations! Having your speech written already is a great bonus, hoped you saved it on the hard drive!!

Another really consistent round saw Rosaleen McGarry Lynch (36) sneak into second place on countback. A nett 37 for both nines is evidence is a player who was in the zone throughout and if it wasn’t for a couple of blips late on Monica’s nerve might have been stretched down the last fairway.

Malia Higgins was just edged into third place also with a net 74. A brilliant par on 3 underpinned an outward nett 36 and Malia was right in the mix at that stage. She remained well in contention until the 16th tee. Unfortunately 16 and 17 were not kind to her and third place it was.

Best gross went to Mary Fetherston, a serial collector of the gross prize. Six pars on 1, 3, 8, 12, 15 and 17 brought a gross 87 on the day.

Class 1 proved to be a tight affair with a welcome return to form for Therese McDonnell who returned a nett 75 for a one shot win over Marie Moynihan and the jet lag free Doreen Dempsey in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Congratulations Ita Ryan who took Class 2 with a nett 74 having been edged out of a top three finish. Ita had two shots to spare over Deirdre Bruce who in turn slipped into 2nd place ahead of 2019 Lady Captain Joan Keegan (mustn’t have been raining)!

Louise McKennedy carded a solid nett 75 to win Class 3 with a two shot advantage over Vice Lady Captain Linda Sweeney. Third place here went to Bionic Breda Boyle.

Eileen Herbert, Suzanne Reynolds and Evelyn Sheehan finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Class 4. Another Close Encounter of the Ballinascorney kind here as the final outcome went right to the final green.

Front and back nine prizes went to Catriona Plunkett and Liz Walsh respectively with a nett 35 and 37.

And so yet another Lady Captain has very successfully overseen her major event. A super day was had by all, the golf was real quality on a beautifully presented course. Thank you to all involved.

Congratulations Monica, and all of the prize winners and most especially thank you Lady Captain Catherine!
