Before the bad weather hit on Sunday last sixty two men teed up on Friday and Saturday for the Men's Friday/Saturday Stableford Qualifier. It was the first "normal qualifier" in a number of weeks as the Competition Secretary worked through the backlog of Covid delayed majors. Well done Tom on your sterling work in getting the seasons schedule cleared in line with the Clubs Covid Action Plan.

On the course it was a week of another first, in a year of firsts! Neil Davidson (21) returned to winners enclosure with a brilliant 40 points. Three points on 2 and pars on 3 and 4 set the adrenaline flowing. However, a tricky patch from 5 to 7 was eased somewhat with three points on 8. An outward 18 however, underscored what was to come on the way home. A par on 10 lit the fuse while a drive, lob wedge and five foot putt on 12 for birdie brought Neil right into contention. Another par on 13 brought a 40 point target into focus but it was 17 where the drama unfolded. A fairway splitting drive and a nine iron to the middle of the green set up a brilliant Pater busting par. Twenty two points home for Neil and his mother was delighted. Well done Neil.

Neils six points on 17 and 18 saw him sneak past the elder Davidson who had capitalised on a birdie on 5 to hit 19 points on the way out. Four pars on the back nine left him on 37 on the 17th tee but he, sadly, two dropped points on the last two holes and they proved fatal, although his brownie points remained intact! He of course retains some consolation in retaining his position as the best golfer in his household!

Spare a thought for Shane Mallen who suffered from the Davidson dogfight. It could have been very different. Pars on 1, 3 and 5 saw Shane set the early pace on Saturday morning. However, dropped points on 6 through 8 meant he had to settle for an outward 16 points. But true to Shane's recent form, a mercurial run of golf brought pars on 11, 12, 13 and 14 to put him right in the mix. A brilliant drive on 18 set up yet another par and 21 points for the inward nine. In the end 37 points took the last podium place on countback from overnight leader Gareth Patel.

Another two days of excellent golf, well done to all who played. I mentioned another first in a year of firsts, well the Club oracle (Vinnie Byrne) has confirmed that to his knowledge the result represents the first time a father and son, or more correctly a son and father, have topped the leaderboard in a Men's competition in Ballinascorney. (We know for sure that it never happened in a Ladies competition!!) Daddy Davidson is very pleased!!
