Today was a day that will be long remembered in Ballinascorney Golf Club! A Bloom Cup Final victory would be the perfect way to mark our Jubilee celebrations and to honour all of the past and present members of our great club. Leading 3-2 from the 1st leg in Dun Laoghaire last week the men needed just 2 1/2 points to take the title.

The early signs were really positive. In the first match out a brilliant fifteen foot putt from Ger Gilroy clinched a hole that initially seemed to be going against the home team. Another win followed on two. Jim Kennedy and Joe Lynch started equally as well and the supporters began to get that happy vibe.

Right down the sheet the numbers were favouring the lads early on. Tom and Ger were pegged back by a par on 4 and birdie on 5 but quickly re-establislhed their advantage and turned two up after nine.

Lar and Hughie were also having a ding dong match in the early holes but began to pull away. As they passed the turn they were three up and beginning to turn the screw.

Talking about screw turning, the Redmond brothers stormed through the outward nine reaching the turn five up. Hard to know if this was sibling rivalry or sibling dove tailing but either way one began to feel sorry for the Dun Laoghaire guys as they simply ran out of holes.

Jim and Joe meanwhile were also making their mark picking up early holes much to the excitement of the home supporters. The early matches were looking very promising!

The final match saw Michael and Martin also in the ascendancy with the early holes being shared but the lads taking the initiative as they approached the ninth.

As with any fourball involving the Captain the first match was flying ahead of the rest of the field. Having turned two up the tenth was lost to a par but the two hole lead was quickly re-established on 11. Twelve brought another win and suddenly the inevitably of the outcome was becoming clear. A further win on 14 and the first match was dormie four to the Ballinascorney pair going down the par 3. The half was duly claimed and the tie went to 4-2, just 1 1/2 required!

Back on the 13th tee the Redmonds were six up and dormie. Two drives on the fairway and the lads were in pole position. As the clinching putt was falling Jim and Joe were claiming the 14th for a 5 and 4 win.

Behind on 13 and 12 Lar and Hugh were three up and Michael and Martin were also three up just to provide insurance.

So 8-2 in the end but don't let the scoreline deceive , every point was hard fought and Ballinascorney were on top of their games all afternoon.

A historic day for the Club which will be long remembered by all who were there! Ten heroes on the day but we had a panel of 13 throughout the competition who all contributed to a sensational run to the final and victory.

Team selection and the matching pairs proved almost perfect. Captain Tom played a leadership role from the front, with Ger keeping him in in the zone. I think Ger lives in the Zone!

Jim and Joe used all of their experience and imposed themselves relentlessly on their opponents in their own style. Formidable is such an understatement of this pair!

The two Redmonds were...................well they were the two Redmonds!

Lar and Hugh, the perfect combination! Lar his usual flamboyant self with Hugh being his even more flamboyant self. Flamboyance in abundance, enough to break any opposition! But don't tell Lar I said that!

Michael and Martin from the Forgotten County were not going to be forgotten just because they were last out! So it proved as they were dominating the final match as the tie was finally called.

Commiserations to Dun Laoghaire, they played some wonderful golf also and were very gracious in defeat. It takes two teams to make a great final and each of the Dun Laoghaire players certainly played their part on a wonderful occasion.

Finally, just savour the following:
